U.S. Geological Survey Circular 946, p. 29-33. 6. MASSIVE MUDSTONES IN BASIN ANALYSIS AND PALEOCLIMATIC INTERPRETATION OF THE NEWARK

چکیده

Massive red or gray mudstones make up much of the fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Newark Supergroup. In fact, the upper third of most sedimentary cycles in the fine-grained facies of most Newark basins is massive mudstone (division 3 of Olsen, 1984). Massive mudstones have not, however, been studied or described nearly as fully as conglomerates, sandstones, and laminated shales. This lack is due primarily to the difficulty in making textural descriptions from weathered outcrop exposures of massive mudstones and to the dearth of published depositional models for them. The widespread distribution and fades associations of massive mudstones in the early Mesozoic basins sug-

Wavelet Spectral Analysis of the Earth’s Orbital Variations and Paleoclimatic Cycles

The wavelet time-frequency spectral analysis is applied to geological records that are proxies of paleoclimatic variations: d18O in sedimentary cores, atmospheric CO2 concentration, and a loess magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy within the past million years. These spectra are compared with those for the astronomically predicted variations of the earth’s orbital eccentricity, obliquity, prece...

Refined Isotope Stratigraphy across the Continental Paleocene-eocene Boundary on Polecat Bench in the Northern

One of the most continuous and best studied continental stratigraphic sections spanning the Paleocene-Eocene boundary is preserved on Polecat Bench in the northern Bighorn Basin. The mammalian biostratigraphy of Polecat Bench sediments has been well documented, and includes a major reorganization of faunas at or near the P-E boundary. To complement the existing biostratigraphy, we measured the ...

Spatial and temporal distribution of biogenic carbonate and opal in deep-sea sediments from the eastern equatorial Paci¢c: implications for ocean history since 1.3 Ma

High-resolution records of glacial^interglacial variations in biogenic carbonate, opal, and detritus (derived from non-destructive core log measurements of density, P-wave velocity and color; rv 0.9) from 15 sediment sites in the eastern equatorial (sampling resolution is V1 kyr) clear response to eccentricity and precession forcing. For the Peru Basin, we generate a high-resolution (21 kyr inc...

Stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in the Truckee River-Pyramid Lake surface-water system. 1. Data analysis and extraction of paleoclimatic information

The 6’*0 content of streamflow discharge entering Pyramid Lake is a simple mixture of isotopically enriched Lake Tahoe discharge and isotopically depleted snowmelt. The aI80 value of Pyramid Lake water varies continuously, as isotopically depleted water evaporates from the epilimnion and isotopically depicted water enters the lake as streamflow discharge and on-lake precipitation. In a normal w...

Using fossil leaves as paleoprecipitation indicators: An Eocene example

Estimates of past precipitation are of broad interest for many areas of inquiry, including reconstructions of past environments and topography, climate modeling, and ocean circulation studies. The shapes and sizes of living leaves are highly sensitive to moisture conditions, and assemblages of fossil leaves of flowering plants have great potential as paleoprecipitation indicators. Most quantita...
